Seaport Scene Issue #330

Street of Two Halves to Get Upgrade

Funds have been allocated for the upgrade of the Picton’s upper High Street, in the Marlborough District Council’s draft budget for the coming year.

Its estimated that the upgrade will cost less than half a million dollars with funding drawn from various sources, including unspent Picton footpath budget and Council’s reserve funds, with a very small portion from the rates levied on Picton commercial/industrial ratepayers.

Councillor David Oddie said this work had been on the Council’s book for some years now. A summary of the project presented to Councillors suggested that, for many years, High Street has been a street of two halves, the bottom end attractively redeveloped, while the top end remained unchanged.

The revamp includes plans to remove nine old Plane trees, which are reaching the end of their lifespan, and plant 11 new trees – probably a mix of Ash and Pohutukawa, like those planted at the lower end of the street. The work already done in the urbanism design strategy will guide the project.

Nothing has been set in concrete yet, in terms of the work to be done, and although some informal consultation has already taken place, there will be more discussion with upper High Street property owners.

Councillors were told that the Picton Business Group would also contribute to the upgrade.

The project is included in Councils budget for the draft Annual Plan which is now open for public submissions. Submissions close at 5pm Thursday 9 May.
